BAMBOO BIKE From INDONESIA

An Indonesian bicycle maker has released an environment-friendly new bicycle with frames made from bamboo. The manufacturer claims the bamboo frames are reportedly stronger than carbon frames found on modern bikes.

As traffic becomes worse and environment awareness increased in Indonesia, biking has become more and more the mode of transportation of choice here.

Gungun Gunawan, a bike enthusiast saw a golden opportunity and created the bamboo bike.

"With easy access to bamboo in indonesia and people going green, I came up with this idea," Gungun said.

Haur or Harmony, Attitude, Unity, and Responsibility is the name he chose in line with the idea of putting conservation first.

Gungun started building prototypes back in 2007 with a couple of his friends. To date they have marketed the bike to foreign markets, all from their tiny workshop here in the outskirts of Bandung in West Java.

But according to gungun, even if the bamboo bike has been proven to be tougher than a normal metal frame, the local market, outside of the bike community, are still unsure

"This is greener than riding a normal bike and you stand out. I'm loving it so far," bike enthusiast Dudi Odoy said.

Gungun and his haur bike has received recognitions from the government and he hopes that with proper marketing the bike will take off.

With more and more Indonesians feeling bamboozled by the worsening traffic, the bamboo bike is looking to be a more viable green alternative and not to mention a stylish one.
